Alex Buono

Many of you know me as the DP of the SNL Film Unit but I've also shot feature films, documentaries, commercials and TV shows — and I was even nominated for an Oscar in short-filmmaking. In fact, I just finished co-directing Documentary Now!, a new IFC comedy series from creators Seth Meyers, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen. But before I was ever a Director or a DP, I was a camera assistant, where I had a chance to learn from legendary ASC cinematographers like Conrad Hall, Dean Cundey and John Schwartzman. They were so generous with their knowledge and inspired me to someday try to do the same — which is why I first offered my Visual Storytelling workshop back in 2013. It was a great experience for me to interact with so many talented filmmakers from all over the country, and over the past two years since my last workshop, I’ve realized that I have a lot more that I want to share. Thus, Visual Storytelling 2 emerged, with same vibe as the original tour but all new content, all new lessons and an overall focus on understanding how to create vastly different Visual Styles and how to harness the power of Visual Subtext.

Latest Work on IFC

Documentary Now! is a new IFC comedy series from creators Seth Meyers, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen. I’m one of two directors on the series, along with my SNL director/producer Rhys Thomas. We’re also working with our SNL editor pal, Adam Epstein — as well as some of the creative nuts from the Portlandia team. The show is a dream for me, collaborating with many of my longtime friends while mixing scripted narrative comedy with a very committed documentary style.
